If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. ― J.R.R. Tolkien

Five Finds Friday (apple dip and other people’s good words)
You know it. Friday again. FUNNY Lately what is hysterical to me are the announcements and proclamations and such that Otto Fox decides to make. When he decides to deliver his information is as equally funny as how he chooses to deliver his message. He is currently The Deliverer Of All Information That Is Gross. Spoken with no drama and no build up. Hours and hours after his discovery he enters a restful near-bedtime living room and hops on the couch. Between singing verses of a song from Sunday School he offers this gem of knowledge — “Guys,” he says. “We have some moldy…

Kids in the Kitchen: You Can Do It!
My kids spend a fair amount of time in the kitchen, helping prepare our family’s meals or whipping up something they imagined or read about or watched. Partially because I need their help, partially because I want them to know how to cook for themselves, partially because I’d like to cook less often myself, partially because they actually enjoy it and partially because I think it’s really important for them to learn about food – how to create it, where it comes from, ways not to waste it, etc. etc. etc. I don’t remember a time when kids weren’t underfoot and around in the kitchen since their…

Five Finds Friday (an applesauce recipe, a Kenny Rogers reference, an inadequate list)
FUNNY Our kitchen cabinets currently look ….. kind of out of control. I had several of the kids practice their times tables by writing them in chalk on the chalkboard cabinet doors. There are three sets of the threes times tables and the numbers scratched wildly everywhere are making me feel a little unstable. I should probably erase them tonight. FASHIONABLE All that rearranging and resorting and window seat making sent me searching for fun pillows. How cute is this one? I love fun throw pillows. But they can get expensive. There are lots of really cute ones available on Amazon for under…

Five Finds Friday (chocolate pudding and head wraps on sale. also cookie pigs.)
Friday comes in on little cat’s feet. No – wait, that’s the fog, right? It comes in on little cat’s feet in a poem – correct? Yeah, who knows. That was probably a nerdy literary reference that only I think is funny. That’s fine. Let’s not mention it – okay? FUNNY This is a real cookie that one of our favorite bakeries sold to us. What is happening here? I don’t even know what it is I am supposed to be looking at. A mama pig? It’s too weird to consume. FASHIONABLE Babies need fashion too. And babies need spit/drool/sweet potato puree…

Five Finds Friday (incredible sauce & lifetime friendships)
FUNNY Our world is full of funny things. Outside of a store in our little downtown I saw this mannequin with this name tag. FASHIONABLE You don’t have to wear all of your fashion, now – do you? Whatever. I’ll share what I feel like here. I make the rules. (In this tiny square footage, that is. Just here. I make the rules right here. It’s tiny, but it’s mine.) My friend Beth (who named my bag Sean Penn) is a super talented artist and probably a super talented nurse. I say probably because I’ve seen Beth’s art. Her nursing – well, I’ve never been…

Five Finds Friday (24) (playing dangerously & a shortcake recipe)
The Fridays – they just keep coming so fast, don’t you know? FUNNY As he rushes past me through the dining room Otto shouts in proclamation — “TRUTH! Never run with scissors.” I stop what I am doing and ask, “Otto. Are you running with scissors?” A quick pause of his rapid foot movement. “Yes.” FASHIONABLE I know I have shared something from title nine before but their clothing is just so fun and functional and I wouldn’t mind owning almost any of it. Most of their skirts have shorts sewn into the base of them and I love that as I prefer wearing skirts all summer instead of wearing…

Five Fridays (nine)
FUNNY I sent this poem by Wendell Berry in a text to my dad the other day. Luckily he thought it was funny too. FASHIONABLE Undoubtedly, this is the hardest entry for me each week. What in the world do I know about fashion? Wait. I’ll tell you. Absolutely nothing. Recently hannaH told me that a friend of hers put me (and hannaH) and our chosen style of dressing in the category of Mary Poppins. I can’t even understand what that means but I feel confident that no one alive is thinking, “Who should I ask for fashion advice? I’ll ask Mary Poppins!” I’ll tell you what I do know,…

Five Finds Friday (eight)
I didn’t do one of these little gems two weeks ago because it was Christmas day – and last Friday found us on another holiday – New Year’s Day. But I think I’ll proceed as planned today. FUNNY My funny seldom comes from the internet. (But I want to laugh more so if you know some internet funny that would crack me up – I’m listening.) But my funny comes a lot from my kids and that’s pretty acceptable to me. Probably my favorite Christmas gift this year was made for me by London. You know how sometimes you just hear some songs wrong and then…

Five Finds Friday (six)
I finally finished that article. Take that, procrastination. Piper keeps announcing how many days are left until Christmas and that’s making me feel a little antsy or unprepared or something because, maybe it’s the weather, but it doesn’t feel all that Christmas-y to me yet. Although we did tour some Christmas trees downtown this week and that helped us all to get in the festive mood I think. It’s Friday though now, friends – and that means ….. FUNNY It’s a great age when your kids are genuinely funny people. Not potty humor funny or toddler mispronounced words funny or teenager kind of ridiculous funny but just straight up seriously…

How To Make Your Children Love You More With One Easy Meal
I thought I left procrastination behind in college. But I was wrong. I have an article for another website due on a deadline and I just can’t seem to make myself put my brain in gear and get it done. I’ve checked Facebook and e-mail and Instagram. I’m sharing this picture of Bergen thinking math thoughts. The kitchen is clean. I paid a bill and I read a friend’s blog post. I took the dog outside and helped the kids work on a puzzle. You guys – I even finished the laundry. And now look at me. Just sitting here typing a post about how you can be the…

Sunday Crock Pot Meals
I like a crock pot. She’s a genius. We’re kind of good buddies. Like me and Thrift Store and me and Colin Meloy. Almost every Sunday we employ Crock Pot’s clever magic. When we return from our weekly church-attending, grocery-shopping morning we enter our home and a meal awaits us. And although no one in our family minds eating the same meals over and over except me, I would love to garner some new tried and true recipes for Crock Pot to perform. So here’s what I thought I’d do. I’ll share some of our favorite Crock Pot Creations and you guys share some of your favorite recipes in the…

My Pinterest Test Kitchen. Still going strong.
It’s not that I haven’t been perusing Pinterest lately. It’s not that I have been ignoring its many virtues. In fact, I still loves me some Pinterest and I still treat it as my personal cookbook primarily. I haven’t forgotten about my Pinterest Test Kitchen. I forgive you if you have. It’s actually a little more like this – I’ve made a concentrated effort to carry my phone less. Which means I am less likely to take a picture of the food attempts I am creating. So let this post suffice – with or without accompanying photographs. Here is a recipe on which you should not waste your time –…

Kids in the Kitchen: A Regular Plan
After London spent a day planning and creating all three meals for our family recently the other kids wanted to take a more active role in food preparation too. So I made a plan. I do love a plan. For now it’s primarily a plan for London, Mosely and Bergen since they can work more independently, but we’ll add in Piper and Otto as time allows. When I’m doing my weekly meal planning, usually Saturday sometime, I have the kids each choose a meal and a menu for one day the following week. To inspire them (and me) I check out cookbooks from the library and also use our own…
