good morning Monday.
It’s Monday morning.
And it’s raining.
We just returned from a weekend camping trip at Lake Jocassee where it did not rain for almost the entire weekend.
The camping trip was marvelous, lovely, fun, wonderful.
This week I’m going to post more pictures from our weekend adventures but Kevin has the better ones on his phone so it’ll take a few days to wrangle the simple acts of clicking and sharing.
But this morning I feel as if I’m going to ramble a little bit.
(That is me, giving you fair warning.)
Did I mention that it is raining?
And has been for days here apparently.
Our home is so damp it’s turning into a mold party.
It’s disgusting.
The dryer cannot handle the wet clothes from camping so they are piling up and joining the mold party as well.
It’s all so gross that it makes me want to set everything on fire.
(Yes, fire is my normal response to conquering mold. Isn’t it everyone’s? Wait – can you tell I’m being facetious? Furthermore, that’s the first time I’ve used the word facetious in a written sentence I think. I need you to know that I spelled it correctly on the first try, without the aid of spellcheck.)
Last night it was so rainy that we didn’t feel motivated to unload the tent (whose zipper broke and whose storage bag ripped this trip) from the vehicle. In fact, we didn’t feel motivated to unpack anything from the Suburban so it’s all still waiting for me this morning. The bag of wet swim clothes that I cannot wash today because I cannot dry them today. The cooler of leftovers. The rain jackets that would serve us better out of the backpacks. I really don’t mind – except that we nearly desperately need to shop for groceries – and there will be nowhere to place them in the backseat. Normally, I would just skip the grocery shopping and eat whatever we could find in the kitchen – cereal, applesauce, yogurt, quinoa, two cans of garbanzo beans that I have no recollection of the purpose for my buying – tossed together most anything can be a meal. But I am scheduled to bring dinner to a friend this evening and frankly, I don’t want to serve my friends cereal and quinoa and garbanzo beans.
Instead of unpacking our camping supplies, we ate pizza for dinner and introduced the kids to the cinematic version of the Robert Louis Stevenson classic Kidnapped. (We had read the book this year so it was fun to see it on the screen.) I’m a stickler for reading the books before seeing the movie.
All of the members of our family did take baths or showers and trust me – that is a major accomplishment. And a necessary one after so much lake swimming and dirt playing this weekend.
It is Monday. And it is raining. Laundry won’t be done today. And I’m not committed to making sure every camping item is returned to its home before night fall.
But it’s a good day to be alive. A good day to be a momma. A good day to serve my family and friends with food-making and errand-running. A good day to laugh and to read books and to finish those last few math lessons. A good day to ignore the mold and to enjoy my ones.
