little rewards
Our friend Bob is an artist.
He’s a great additional grandpa.
(The kids refer to him as Pop-Pop. That is, when they aren’t referring to him as the “maker of the finger paint you can eat”.)
He’s a minister.
He’s our friend.
And he has written a children’s study of Lent and wanted us to give it a test run.
Which we have been doing.
And in so doing, we had a short history lesson about pretzels.
The word means “little reward” in Latin.
The shape resembles the crossing of arms that monks would do as they prayed.
And now you have had a little history lesson as well.
The lesson was cool.
The kids have been crossing their arms and praying and asking for “little rewards” since we learned the information.
But the best part might have been the actual creating of legitimate soft pretzels.
I used this recipe.
And it was really easy.
The recipe only made eight pretzels.
Which was one for each member of our home.
But we still wanted more.
Kevin helped us dip the soft dough shapes into boiling water – the part of the recipe I was not down with.
(Did you noticed his dipping contraption?
It’s an old spatula that he is holding with tongs to make it longer.
He’s clever like that.)
We even happened to have huge flakes of Kosher salt in our house.
Ready for the end result.
Which was
truly
amazing.
Seriously.
These pretzels were not good as in
how-fun-to-make-pretzels-at-home
good.
They were good as in
better-than-a-pretzel-at-the-ball-game
good.
If you decide to make them at your house,
could you please save one for me?

Ok- as I was scrolling down your post and came upon the picture of the "utensil" that you all were using to dip the pretzel into the water I say to myself "What the heck is that thing they are using?? It's like a spatula/tong/thing." Then, I like read the very next line wherein you singlehandedly relieved all of my concerns…. Aside from that- they do look amazing and apparently taste amazing as well 🙂

Maybe we should try to market that spatula thing as a Super Utensil and sell it on television for all of your pretzel boiling needs.

Yay! I'm so glad you posted the recipe link. I love soft pretzels and got spoiled by them when we lived near Amish Country in PA. I can't wait to try this myself.
