Kid Coder: A Timberdoodle Review
KidCoder is a complete program sold by Timberdoodle that offers an online web design course.
The target age for KidCoder is 4th grade and up and it comes as part of the 8th grade curriculum if you prefer to order your curriculum whole.
This summer I had London, my eighth grader, begin the KidCoder course, knowing that this review would come due in the fall and I wanted to be able to have given it a good go before I commented on it.
Just like Bloxels, I really handed this one over to London because the point for me was to have a web design program that taught my student something I have very little experience in – coding. (And by “very little experience” I guess I basically mean “none”. None experience. That’s the amount I have in anything code related.)
Once I agreed to review KidCoder, I quickly received an email from the support staff with instructions on how to get the program on our computer and I had London read the emails with me. She was able to follow the instructions and it was a pretty simple process to begin the system.
London has been working on KidCoder for the last several months, a few times each week, and has created a website using code and has learned quite a large amount of basic instruction in code. I haven’t helped her at all and if she has needed any help, a quick email has answered any questions.
I plan to let the other kids try their hand at KidCoder too – probably after Christmas.
Although I can’t say London ever described the process as fun or thrilling, she hasn’t complained about it either. She was anxious to stat the course and can’t complained about the projects.
The instructions guide the student step by step, screen by screen.
I have definitely sensed a satisfaction in her as she has completed a website through coding, entirely on her own.
Timberdoodle continues to provide quality resources and a great support system.
