try this at home
For a joke, before I went to bed, I looked at my calendar – just to be sure I was on top of anything that might be happening tomorrow.
Yep.
Nothing’s happening.
I’m on top of it.
I mean, I still have a job (or three) and the kids still have school (but not this week – it’s our spring break) but you know, like everyone else, life has slowed right down. Kind of.
I want to share a game that I saw on Facebook. By the way, my phone informs me my screen time usage ranked higher than ever last week. I’m not surprised. Irritated at myself, but unsurprised.
Back to the game ….
For when you’re spending another family night in and you need to remind all the people you live with that they like one another and that it’s fun to be together and that it’s good to laugh. When you need that reminder, if you need that reminder. (We need that reminder.)
Here’s the game.
The most basic of all – Hide and Seek.
But like this:
You pick ONE room of your house.
The lights all stay on.
You blindfold the seeker.
That seeker counts to 20 or something. (23. I don’t care. Just a number.)
During the counting time everyone in the family hides in that same one room.
The seeker looks for you all, blindfolded. They win when they find one of you.
It sounds simple.
And it is.
But it is shockingly hilarious.
And wildly well received in a house full of teenagers, some of whom think they no longer want to play family games.
The hiding spaces were what made the game so funny.
That, and trying desperately to hold in your laughter (and your breathing) when the blindfolded seeker is inches from your face but has no idea.
You can expect kids standing on tables, cramming themselves under furniture, balancing inside a window, no feet touching the base at all, pretty much undetectable.
We played round after round, tears streaming down my face.
When it was my turn the kids were so quiet I literally thought they had all tricked me and just gone outside.
We recorded a lot of the sessions but none of the recordings were given approval by the kids for me to share here. Which is a real shame, but I’ll go with respecting their opinions, blah blah blah.
Anyway, it’s not my original idea (thanks for sharing it Dawn!), but I couldn’t resist sharing it with you guys and I’d love to see your attempts.
It’s far funnier than you might imagine and perfect for every single age at your house.
