Making Terrariums

After we finished reading The Magician’s Nephew (which I just love, by the way – remember Digory our dog?  That’s the book his name came from. Like so many other names, I tired first to name one of our children Digory but with no success) the curriculum suggested several ways to create your own magical world.

We landed on terrariums – a project I’ve actually always wanted to try.

Any jar or glass container with or without a lid will work.

 It’s seriously super simple.

the group effort.

We chose a jar that belonged to my mom – I think it held sugar once upon another life.

The idea is basic, although of course you can get as extravagant as you’d like.

This is our terrarium at almost literally no cost. (I did have to buy the charcoal. Although I won’t have to buy any more if we make another one soon. It was a pretty large amount.)

See our rabbit watch pet?

It’s all about layers. Rocks. Charcoals. Moss. Dirt. Then most any topping you like – moss, succulents, a combination of both and more.

We added in several special rocks from trips and a geode for color. I like how the glass jar allows you to see the layers in such a pretty way.

A plastic white rabbit lives on a tiny stump in our fairyland.

Yesterday at breakfast – because the terrarium is currently our table’s centerpiece – Kevin spotted a centipede who has taken up residence in our fairyland – you can watch him tunnel right through. I have a sneaking suspicion my young bug aficionado had something to do with that permanent visitor.

I love this idea! I’ve always wanted to make one too. You’ve inspired me (as usual :D). I love the jar choice. Very cute about the bug…such a boy thing. Crystal’s son had a pet grub last month. 🙂 We lost a “pet caterpillar once–Fuzzy–found him about a year later, stiff as a nail, tucked between 2 bricks on the fireplace, behind a print above the mantel.
