questions and answers.
Some of my favorite posts in the past have been the interviews with my children.
It is possible that the interviews are primarily adorable to me and me alone.
And I’m okay with that.
I like hearing their answers to my questions and listening as they really ponder how they feel and what they think about anything I ask.
And it’s been a reaalllly long time since I’ve lured a kid in by my writing side and asked them a handful of questions.
Too long, in fact.
Welcome to ….. the return of The Interview.
The interview with the child who has been interviewed most frequently, because she adores an audience. My Piper Finnian Willow.
Hi. How are you today?
Good.
So. This week you’ve done something pretty amazing. What’s that?
Um. I stopped sucking my thumb.
Wow. Was it hard?
Hmm. Mmm. Very hard.
Why was that so hard?
Because I’ve been sucking it for a while and I’m getting pretty used to it.
Why couldn’t you ever stop before?
Because it’s so hard by myself. Without that stuff I couldn’t do it.
Cool. What do you want to do to celebrate this momentous occassion?
I don’t know.
Do you know what momentous means?
No.
What do you think it means?
Party?
It means a big deal – a special happening. So, stopping sucking your thumb is a big deal. A special thing.
Mmm. Hmmm.
So what should we do to celebrate?
We could have petit fours and chocolate covered strawberries. How does that sound? Delicious?
Yes. Yes, it does. Tell me about school right now for you Willow.
It’s fun.
What’s fun?
I like doing my math.
Why?
Because it’s fun and I already know what to do. It’s ridiculous.
Why is that?
Because it has stuff I already know.
What do you think about being a kindergarten student next year?
That will be fun.
What do kindergarteners get to do?
They get to do fun stuff.
Like what?
Umm. Like talk about stuff and do math stuff – real math stuff, not my puny math book. [giggles galore] It is really puny Mom. Puny. So puny. Puny, puny, puny, puny, puny.
Do you know what puny means?
Yes.
What?
Yes. It means it’s not really fun and it means puny and puny means it’s kind of like riciulous but it’s not, right – Mom?
Yeah, sort of. Puny means really tiny or unimpirttant. Is that what your math is?
No. Well, kind of.
Let’s talk about Otto for a minute. What’s fun about him?
The first part is that he’s really cute. He is funny when he does funny stuff. He plays with me. He likes to do stuff that I do. Like, um, when I say let’s go upstairs to play he says yeah, let’s go upostairs to play.
Yeah. Is he your buddy?
Yes.
Are you glad you have brothers?
Yes. Very glad.
What about sisters?
Um. I love having them.
Would you want to be an only child?
NO! I like people to play with me.
If you could spend one whole day doing anything you wanted, what would you do?
Ride a unicorn all day. That would be my dream come true.
You know, youv’ve loved unicorns for a long long time. What makes the unicorn so interesting to you?
That they’re pretty and I like how they look. They have pretty horns.
Listen, cutie – do you have anything you’d like me to write for you?
Um. No.
Nothing you want to say?
No.
And that’s where the interview falls apart and my guest exits the room.
