Five Year Old Finnian.
There’s no end to the posts I’ve written about my youngest daughter.
But when it’s your birthday – you get another one!
Piper Finnian Willow Lacey turned five.
Five!
Half a decade. Little year on top of little year on top of little year.
She only remembers ever having lived in South Carolina.
She has no recollection of sleeping in a crib at the foot of our bed for the first six months of her life. Of loading all of our possessions in a U-Haul and moving two states down to as far south as I ever hope to reside.
In her memory, her life began at Look Up Lodge – as the camp baby and then the camp kid who could wield a scary kind of charm over two dozen college students with a waggle of her pinky and a tilt of her head.
Goodness, what does our future hold?
The birthday tradition in our house is that you get to pick what we eat.
That rule used to just apply to dinner, but somehow as the kids have become better negotiators it has somehow morphed into being allowed to choose what every meal of the day will be.
So, it goes like this – the birthday kid picks the food, almost anything goes, and we all have to eat exactly what they choose.
Our menu on Finn’s day looked like this: Breakfast – Fruity Pebbles. Lunch – Macaroni and Cheese. Dinner – Mashed potatoes, peas and slices of plain buttered bread.
Ah – it’s a good thing I don’t let the five year old plan every day’s rations.
We had a lovely day, however, despite our low low intake of fruits and vegetables.
Piper Finn received a doll as her gift. She has been carrying it everywhere.
And she named it ….. Maggie Aggie.
Really – what’s not to love about this kid?

that kid. those faces. can we bottle it up and keep the essence of a 5 yr old piper to get out on a crummy day?
