Bergen Hawkeye

Yesterday.

I couldn’t just talk about Hawkeye on one day only.

The kid’s so cute, he deserves a day or two, right?

We had a plan for his birthday – we really did.

Bergen asked to go on a hike and we were only too happy to oblige such a simple and sweet request. However, the rain had other plans for us. And so did the strep throats that three of our chaps were sporting.

Instead, we postponed the hike for Saturday and spent the day being a lot more flexible.

At the breakfast table Bergen was served his breakfast of choice – waffles with homemade cream, topped off with one single strawberry.

We tooled over the mountain to Asheville to visit the gorgeous Grove Park Inn. They had recently held a birdhouse competition there and the birdhouses were all still on display. The birdhouses were cool and completely satisfied Bergen’s aviary desires. Kevin and I loved the architecture and the beauty of the inn.  In fact, we’d love to go back for an overnight stay one day- sans children.

We asked Hawke where he would like to eat lunch and man, was I ever excited by his choice. It just so happens that he chose my personal favorite pizza place – Mellow Mushroom. And the pizza craftsman surprised us with a special dough/honey/cinnamon sugar creation just for our seven-year-old birthday boy.

When we arrived home we opened Berg’s presents – all along a pretty clear theme. A hiking back pack and a bird poster and a new like-Daddy hat from Mommy and Daddy. A hummingbird feeder and more bird seed from Riley. A plastic balancing bird from Mosely. A dog stuffed animal from Scout.

And, in our family, you are always allowed to choose your style of birthday cake decorations.

No surprise, really. Bergen chose a birdhouse cake.

It was such a simple sweet day.

Just enjoying a little fellow who just wrapped up six and is sitting on the verge of seven right now.
