An Early Birthday

Do you like surprises?

I heart surprises.

Really, I do.

(Well, good surprises.  I seriously love good surprises.  I’m like a surprise junkie.  I can never get enough.)

And it seems like for birthdays I usually find myself giving people what I want – surprises!

Kevin’s birthday is this weekend and I have a few family surprises up my sleeve for him.

But I couldn’t wait until Saturday.

So I had a little early birthday date night last night for just the two of us.

(I had been crazy sick all morning.  As in, not even rising from the bed until after 3 p.m.  But Kevin’s gracious help allowed me to sleep and rest and I rallied for the evening because I had already made these plans and I needed to leave that rotten sick bed and move.)

I told him the theme was a Redneck Birthday.

(Which is, uh, completely out of character for both us.  Not that I am unfamiliar with rednecks.  I grew up on a dairy farm in the Virginia mountains.  I’m familiar, alright.)

Anyway, I went with the stereotypical version of rednecks, minus the rebel flag, mind you.

And you know what that means, don’t you?

First – you have your guns.

Kevin and I visited an indoor shooting range.

Which was really fun.

Kind of loud.

And a reminder that my gun shooting skills are . . . anything but skilled.

And after guns, well, you know what you need next – right?

Beer.

There’s a new store that has recently opened in our town – Community Tap.

It’s a really quirky craft beer and wine shop with simple decor and unique art on the walls.  They carry all kinds of local and not so local craft and small batch beers and wines.

I don’t even like beer, but the store looks great and the owner was personable and passionate about his product – and that was fun to see.

And Kev likes craft beers and it was for his birthday and all.

We wrapped up our redneck evening with a stop for dinner at Barley’s downtown for pizza and calzones.

(Mine has pesto sauce and loads of tomatoes – you have to try that combination sometime!)

And because on our date nights we feel it is our duty to eat dessert as well, we took a chilly walk down Main Street to Coffee Underground for more food than we needed.

(My second recommendation of this post – trigger pie.  Which, now that I think about it, was pretty apropos, wasn’t it?  Yeah, apropos and delicious.)

I can’t wait to call my brothers and tell them I shot a gun and went to a beer store.

(Two of them are certified rednecks – so I think they’ll be proud.)
