And Also . . . About Commonplace

I just wrote about Chambers and his classic little book My Utmost For His Highest.

And the quote I included said, “Some people do a certain thing and the way in which they do it hallows that thing for ever afterwards.  It may be the most commonplace thing, but after we have seen them do it, it becomes different.”

As soon as I read that, certain people flashed in my mind.  Certain people and the way that those people do commonplace things that become different after they do them.  (And trust me, when I call something commonplace, I am NOT suggesting it is unimportant.  On the contrary.  As you know.)

People like . . .

Sarah Markley – and the way she writes with simplicity and honesty.  Writing – a commonplace thing.

Shelley – and the way she creates art out of oranges and celebrates the beauty in a pile of buttons.  Homemaking – a commonplace thing.

Leanne – and the way she orchestrates memories and moments in milestones all the time.  Like baby showers.  And birthday parties.  Planning – a commonplace thing.

Emma – and the way she captures people’s vibes and personalities through her camera lens.  Photography – a commonplace thing.

Gretchen – and the way she sacrifices for her family and loves her children with devotion and purpose.  Mothering – a commonplace thing.

This list could really just go on for pages.

(And I know I have left important, commonplace-doing people in my own life off this short list.)

Maybe today – at some point in your own day, doing your own commonplace things – you can take the opportunity to thank someone else for doing the commonplace in a way that it is changed forever – hallowed, altered.

No longer so

commonplace.
