Outdoor Hour Challenge. VIII.
Man, I don’t know why I decided to title each of these Outdoor Hour Challenge posts with Roman Numerals. My skills are pretty weak once you pass the Roman Numeral V.
My little band and I reached Challenge Numero Ten. (Yikes – I must be typing late at night because I am just hopping from Roman Numerals to Spanish and back again. You know what’s even funnier than that though? These sentences are making me laugh right now because it is late while I’m typing this but it probably won’t be late when you are reading this which will mean that this is not in the least bit comical to anyone except me.)
Anyway, I figured a celebration was in order for making it to ten. (Ten activities completed in order, as instructed, in a timely and appropriate fashion. Yes, that’s a reason to celebrate.)
I was excited to discover that a celebration was, indeed, in order.
Lesson number ten instructed us to have a picnic – to eat outside (even if it was only a snack) and then observe your surroundings and finish with a journal entry if you wanted. (Which I always want to – it’s one of my favorite parts of nature study – the notebook.)
Having a picnic was a super-simple task for us. When it’s above 65 degrees or so, we usually eat outside anyway.
The kids think it’s amazing because we’re outside. I think it’s amazing because we use less plates, we make less mess and for some reason the kids will eat almost anything if we eat it outside.
We had our picnic on a blanket in the yard and after we ate we pulled out our notebooks and decided to draw whatever we could see in front of us.
The kids all turned to face the new bird house Kevin and Hawkeye completed recently and everyone wanted to draw that.
I even somehow convinced all of the kids to try their hand at writing a poem about the birds that might eventually occupy the bird house.
All in all, I’d say finishing our ten first lessons was a success – with a little creative writing thrown in.

OK, you're whole little Roman numeral into Spanish into cracking yourself up thing sounded a whole lot like a thought process I'd have. 😉

What a wonderful account of your OHC #10…picnic! It is wonderful to be outdoors with our children and enjoying alongside them the refreshing aspect of nature. I am very impressed that you encouraged them to write a little poetry as part of their journals. Excellent! Thanks for sharing with the OHC carnival.
