Do the Math

So Jon said something recently that made me realize a sort of sad fact.

A depressing numbers game.

I was changing a diaper.

(That’s no surprise.  No surprise.)

And that’s what he said, actually.

Jon said, “Hey.  You are pretty good at that, eh?”  (Well.  Maybe Jon didn’t say “eh”.  I like to say “eh” though.  So I thought maybe me-quoting-Jon-speaking-in-my-blog should say “eh”.  Eh?)

So Jon said, “Hey.  You are pretty good at that, eh?  Because you know, you’ve been doing that for, what, seven years?”

I laughed at his exaggeration.

Seven years?

Yeah.  Sure.  That’s crazy.  Seven years.

Wait.

Seven years.

Yes.  London is now seven years old.

And she was our first baby-wearing-diapers.  (We missed that stage of Riley.  No poopy pants when you’re six – right?)

Which means . . .

Yes.

I have been changing diapers for seven years.

That’s a career, folks.

(And I am not currently done changing diapers.  Please see exhibit Baby Number Six for further details.)

Seven years.

How many diapers does a kid average in a day?

I mean – there’s the early days of like ten a day or something ludicrous.  But then it sort of mellows out as they age – you know, to maybe six.  Then down to what – four?

I am kind of afraid to put pen to paper to figure this one out.

How many diapers have I actually changed during the course of my Diaper Changing Career?

Anybody want to do the math?

I know someone who has an app on her iPod touch that tracks how many diapers she's changed. But she didn't start until her newest was born. Still…that's a lot of diapers!

      Oh hilarious!
      An app!
What a world – an app for diaper changing.
I would like to know her count!

The math would be that by now you have a PhD in diaper changing with in minor in stinky ones!
    Cute post!
I can't remember if I commented on the one where you interviewed your daughter a few days ago, but that was the funniest thing. I was sitting beside my six yr old yesterday and he was talking to his little sister about how you "git" married and I thought of what you would do in this case. Sooo, I grabbled a sheet of paper and wrote down every.single.word.they said….it was too funny. someday I will do a blog post on that. You are a wonderful writer. You have a heart it seems for capturing the real stuff in life. The way you word your thoughts and the thoughts of others makes your reader feel as though they are actually having a conversation with you.
    good stuff here!
sorry to make this comment so lonnnnng!

      Um.
This might be the coolest compliment I have received in along time – you thought what I would do!!
      Wow!!
And I am sure it will be hilarious. You just can’t make up funnier stuff than comes out of kids’ mouths.
I just wonder why we don’t stay that funny when we grow up.
